Video piracy through illegal downloads and streaming are a major problem for content owners. As of July 2007, illegally downloaded video content represents 40% of all Internet traffic.

Illegal video content is made available to users through Peer to Peer (P2P) file sharing networks, or through direct download on numerous videosharing web sites. There are over 130 P2P networks that account for 3.6 billion file downloads per month. HIRO enables the inclusion in-stream interactive commercials into video file downloads. These advertisements cannot be fast-forwarded or skipped.

HIRO is a software codec that controls movie playback on a viewer's device. When a file is encoded, it uses the movie timeline to do two things. Firstly it establishes where ads should appear - these are timed to appear in natural breaks in the video, usually black frames. Secondly, it removes parts of the movie itself - it removes these parts to render the file un-hackable. 10%-20% of the movie is stripped out and saved separately providing protection for content.

In short, content owners can provide free and legal, high-quality HIRO files to consumers and control their distribution through P2P and filesharing networks.

HIRO creates a way to generate revenue each time a video file is viewed, and allows advertisers to measure ad views and gather meaningful data about advertising performance and consumer preferences.
